San Leonardo 1993

Tasting Notes

Genuary 2010 - Fine Wine - 17.5/20
One of the surprises of the tastino, this wine displayed a healthy depth of color and pienty of life on the nose-leather and spice, medicinal notes, not unlike a fine claret. Quite mouthfilling and fruity with good balancing acidity and tannins in perfect bilance, keeping it young and muscular, yet with the characterisic elagance. Very good lenght and has the ability to travel on.
April 2007 - The Four Seasons Restaurant
It was the only wine that appeared to be fully mature. It revealed gorgeous aromatics but was somewhat lean in its expression of baking spices, tobacco, roasted coffee beans and soft, perfumed fruit. Its delicate personality worked surprisingly well with our first courses. I loved the 1997 San Leonardo. Made in a decidedly riper style, its generous, opulent fruit, rich texture and inner sweetness offered a nice balance to its herbal flavors. A ten years of age, its color intensity and vibrancy were surprisingly primary. The 1999 San Leonardo was quite a bit leaner in body, with expressive aromatics and pretty fruit although the oak remained prominent. The estate's 2000 San Leonardo was the only wine in this group that was somewhat of a disappointment. Its tertiary leather and spice cakes notes and modest depth conveyed an impression of a relatively evolved wine of modest complexity. Fortunately the best was saved for last. Served alongside the Kobe beef, the 2001 San Leonardo was terrific. Made in a nuanced, elegant style, it revealed gorgeous layers of ripe fruit, sweet spices, herbs and toasted oak on a medium-bodied frame of notable finesse.

Harvest Report

The growing year was within the norm in terms of temperatures, except for the first half of August, when the average was almost 34 °C and there was practically no rain (2.4 millimetres). We should note that precipitation was high and concentrated in a very few days, with 194 millimetres in late September and early October. Picking was carried out during dry intervals on 22 September for Merlot and after 10 October for Cabernet.

Maturity Curve and Serving

A vintage to hold onto as the wine can improve still further. Serve at a temperature of 16 °C.
